Delhi is still not ‘really’ safe for Women but the Government and Delhi Police are trying to make it a safer place for women. I would like to point out the steps that have been proposed / taken by the Delhi Govt and Police and then analyze their implementation –

1. On 25th March – In the first phase, CCTV cameras will be installed at vulnerable points within the jurisdiction of 44 police stations where the crime graph against women is higher.

2. Delhi University – Police pickets at strategic points, emergency response vehicles, quick response teams, anti eve teasing teams deployed, CCTV cameras, self defence training programs, mobile and foot patrolling intensified and complaint boxes at various colleges & hostels.

3. Delhi Police Initiatives – Women’s Helpline Number 1091; An Anti-Stalking Service for women, “Himmat” Mobile Safety App for women, the Himmat Whatsapp Group and the Facebook page for feedback.

4. Public Transport – In Jun 2015, 2000 Home Guard marshals were deployed across the buses of state-run Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC). The Home Guards reported to regional managers of DTC who in turn deployed these marshals on different checking beats throughout the capital.

5. OTR One Touch Response App – Personal safety app in which subscribers can activate safe tracking services, which monitor them as they travel through unsafe areas or when travelling at odd hours. OTR offers a single point of contact for all situations such as personal safety monitoring, managing physical threats, road accidents and medical emergencies or on road assistance.

7. Sept 2015 – Pilot project to install CCTV cameras in schools was started with installation in two of the three government schools of Delhi – Mori Gate and East Vinod Nagar. Government authorities – including the Department of Education — will initially monitor the cameras. Later, the plan is to provide a secure access for parents to through a mobile application, so they can keep an eye on their children. Installation of overall 70,000 CCTVs combined in all 700 schools of Delhi is planned for now.

8. Aug 2015 – The women workforce in PCR vans will be increased to 500 in the coming days so that there is greater presence of women police personnel on the streets.

9. Cab Service Ola & Uber – AAP government  decided not to compromise with Delhi’s women safety by directing the companies to only run taxis which have GPS and Delhi government license, to operate in capital.

10. Delhi Govt – proposed Charter of Women’s Rights Bill, 2015, which aims at strengthening Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) by giving it more administrative and judicial powers, and will incorporate recommendation made by Justice J.S. Verma Committee in the wake of the Nirbhaya rape case.

Despite of all these moves by the Delhi Govt and Police, there is still a lot of apprehension about women safety in Delhi because of the slow and moderately efficient implementation of these steps. The women safety issue has also been taken over by DCW – Delhi Commission for Women Chief Swati Maliwal in support from Delhi Police.

There are hopes of the safety factor to get better from 3 to 7 on a scale of 10 by Jan 2016 if the current moves are implemented effectively by then.

Why Womans Lonely Should Be safe ?

Women traveling by themselves need to take some extra precautions. Here are a few practical pointers to help women stay safe on those solo business trips.

0

About half of business travelers are women. Although the travel industry is adapting to accommodate women travelers, they’re still more vulnerable than men when traveling by themselves. These tips can help women avoid becoming a victim. Women traveling abroad will also benefit from these tips, but there’s much more to consider in those situations, and this article doesn’t address the special issues of foreign travel.

Take only the personal credit and debit cards you must have; leave the rest at home. Keep the cards you take on your person — in a hip pocket, your shoe, a sock, or even your bra, but not in your purse. Some experts recommend using a money belt, but that’s cumbersome and frankly, if robbed, you’ll lose everything at once. Instead, stash your money and cards in a couple of hard-to-reach spots in your clothing.

Keep your daily spending cash easily accessible. You don’t want to pull a wad of bills out of your sock to buy a hot dog from a kiosk. Avoid carrying a lot of cash.

Never tell anyone that you’re traveling alone. Lie if you have to — society and your mother will forgive you. If someone approaches you and asks, “Is this your first time in Atlanta?” respond with “No, we visit often. We love it here!” The stranger’s request is probably genuine, but there’s no need to advertise your vulnerability.
